Yes, it was a happy day at Loome Theological Booksellers. Mostly unannounced, but always very welcome, arrived Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, of wdtprs fame. Ready to greet him was the foot-high Dante statue which previously had but taunted him for saying that he was going to come to the store but not really coming (at least not immediately). Now, of course, the two look quite happy together (not to mention the smiling figure in the frame, Leo PP. XIII.). Father took an interest in a good many excellent books, amusing stories were shared... and fun was had by all. See you next time, Fr. Z!

7/21/10 UPDATE: Fr. Z's account of his visit.
I'm not so sure I'd be touting his visit. His blog reeks of an odd traditionalist hubris and the occasional gourmet cooking tip. Not gaining credibility in my book.
ReplyDeleteha ha, anonymous! seriously?
ReplyDelete@anonymous is obviously in 2001, and won't be joining us for several more years. hello--it's the biggest Catholic blog out there. it's the bigfoot of Catholic blogs. It probably gets more traffic than vatican.va, for Zeus' sake.
ReplyDeleteOne unexpected benefit to Fr. Z's unexpected visit was that he pulled a book out of our Augustine section that he recommended we destroy. There is a certain bookcase on the stairway to the basement at Loome with a certain few books that have been "screwed" to it. It's a bit like the Loome wall of shame. This particular Augustine book (not BY Augustine, but about him) may find a permanent resting place on this bookcase, or it may meet a more creative fate. We shall see . . .
ReplyDeleteFr Z's site is very popular with young Catholics. I am young (28) and I visit his blog regularly!!
ReplyDeleteWe've got plenty of books on said hubris. Please enquire with specific requests or for recommendations.
ReplyDelete[My guess is that Fr. Z posted the anonymous comment just for some fun. Ha!]

ReplyDeleteAnonymous (the latest one, at least), your pranks are unwelcome and uncharitable. Knock it off. You don't have to like Fr. Z, but you ought to behave respectably.
ReplyDeleteAndy--
ReplyDeleteI think that the final word in your post (above) should be "respectfully." Surely, this more adeequately conveys the tone which you apparently wish to convey.
Andy--
ReplyDeleteI think that the final word in your post (above) should be "respectfully." Surely, this more adequately conveys the tone you wish to have.
Anonymous (viz. the last two) --
ReplyDeleteMy sense is "in a socially acceptable manner", and I believe "respectable" conveys it. Perhaps my English is off, but take it as I mean it.
Posting what was posted (by Anonymous 2) was not only imprudent, but seemed clearly to be threatening, i.e. not an acceptable manner of public engagement.
Honestly, if you (Anonymous 1 and 2 and/or others) think Fr. Z's blog to be reeking of an "odd traditionalist hubris" or worse, I wouldn't mind hearing why. But threatening gestures are not acceptable.
And please address me as Mr. Poole, Sir, or even just Andrew. Only my mother, certain old friends, and for some reason everyone at Wells Fargo call me Andy.
